Patong Beach is the party capital of Thailand with bars and clubs of every kind open all year round. Not for the faint hearted, this is a town of excitement and noise that attracts thousands of visitors every year, all looking for a good time. The nightlife is legendary while the tropical climate makes Paradise Beach the perfect place to relax during the day. From top quality shopping and pamper sessions to adventure activities and an array of cuisines, Patong has everything you could need for some well-deserved fun.
The nightlife in Patong is legendary making it one of the most popular destinations in East Asia. The heart of the party is Bangla Road, or Soi Bangla , where you’ll find over one hundred different nightclubs and bars within walking distance of the beach and numerous hotels. Whatever you’re looking for you’ll find here, whether that be karaoke or live music, rock clubs, go-go bars or a pool joint; Patong Beach has it all.
For something a bit different head over to Simon Cabaret for a night of feathers, glitter and glamour. The amazing trans performers put on quite the show, which makes for a memorable evening, although tickets sell out fast, so be sure to book in advance.
The party doesn’t have to stop when the sun comes up and April is something of a celebration month in Patong. Thai New Year brings the Songkran Festival, a giant water fight which takes over the streets while Phuket Gay Pride starts a four-day party with a parade, beach tournaments and beauty contests.
Patong isn’t just about the nightlife as there is plenty to do during the day. The relative shelter of the crescent bay makes Patong a great spot for all kinds of water sports including windsurfing and parasailing however it’s advised that tourists avoid jet ski rental as some operators run costly scams which can leave you seriously out of pocket. For your adrenaline kicks why not travel further inland to the Wake Park instead which provides group lessons during the week.
If you’re still looking for a thrill, then zip wiring across the jungle canopy offers a great day out with the chance to see some incredible views. Petrol heads on the other hand may prefer to check out the go-kart speedway, while others head over to one of the local gyms to try out a spot of Muay Thai boxing. However you want to blow off steam, you’ll find something to suit in Patong.
If the partying and adventure gets a little too much then you can always relax with a day on the beach or treat yourself to a massage at one of the many spas and parlours in town. Paradise Beach is the main attraction boasting two miles of white sands and crystal clear waters. There are several accredited diving schools along the shore where you can book scuba lessons as well as rent snorkel gear.
Alternatively, you can learn about some of the local culture by trying out one of the Phuket Old City Tours or try exploring on your own. The slightly overgrown yet beautiful Buddhist temple, Wat Suwan Khiri Wong, is well worth a visit as is the Good Luck Shrine, not far from the beach. Tour companies operating in Patong can also give you chance to take day trips around the rest of Phuket and the surrounding islands.
When it comes to food you’ll be spoilt for choice in Patong. There are a number of top quality beach side restaurants serving food from around the world as well as Thai dishes. Closer towards the centre of town, Patong Food Park is a great place to try some of the local seafood at a good price.
Hotels in Patong tend to be more expensive than on average for Phuket, especially during the high season in December and January. Most hotels will charge more for an air-conditioned room, but those towards the south end of the beach often cater better for tourists on a budget.
Jungceylon is the city’s shopping centre where you’ll find many familiar international brands as well as restaurants and entertainment. However, for a real bargain it’s worth heading over to the markets in town and try haggling with the stallholders. Patong is also home to several art galleries and antique shops which are well worth seeking out for some particularly special souvenirs.
