About Alpine Lodge

Alpine Lodge is a small hostel accommodating up to 26 guests. It is popular with business people and outdoor enthusiasts who are keen to explore the Queenstown Hill and Lake Wakatipu areas.

Accommodation at Alpine Lodge is in private rooms and dormitories with bunk beds. Wi-Fi is free throughout and bathroom and toilet facilities are shared with other guests.

Communal facilities include a TV lounge with film selections, and two kitchens. Limited parking plus cycle, ski and luggage storage facilities are all free. There are, in addition, terrace, patio and BBQ areas.

Supermarkets including FreshChoice and Raeward Fresh are an approximate five minutes' walk away. It is a similar distance to breakfast at The Exchange. Later and double that walking time, the Public Kitchen, with views over Lake Wakatipu, is one of a number of well-priced eateries in the town.

Also within easy walking distance are SKYCITY Casino and Milford Galleries where the works of contemporary New Zealand artists are displayed.

Positive Reviews

A homely atmosphere

It is quite a small hostel so guests expecting all-night parties will be disappointed. Most though enjoy the friendly, laid-back atmosphere. Guests find it very homely here.

The location is a winner

The centre of Queenstown can become quite frenzied and fun-packed. It is, though, an easy walk away for guests wanting to be part of the action. Here, things are much quieter and a welcome relief for those in need of a good night’s sleep.

Helpful staff

Generally, management and staff are friendly and helpful. They are happy to advise on places to visit, walking and cycling routes and best value restaurants.

Negative Reviews

A cool reaction

One of the prime negative features for guests is the cold. Whatever the weather, all windows are flung open in the morning and temperatures have difficulty in improving from that point. Yes, there are heaters in the bedrooms but they can’t be switched on until nightfall. Bathroom temperatures are, as expected, similar to those of a refrigerator

Unfaded and faded features

Walls are very thin and this results in an inconvenient noise factor. The noise does not fade but furniture in the room is sparse and items such as curtains are getting quite drab.

A facilities lottery

There are advertised facilities here, the reality of which can only be charitably described as being disappointing. Parking is free but there are only three available spaces. Even then, the needs of guests who are working in the area receive preference over those of tourists. The free Wi-Fi only works in very restricted areas and to find bunk beds in a double room comes as another unpleasant surprise for some unlucky guests.
