Positive Reviews

Convenient location for sightseeing

The hostel is an easy walk from a number of cultural sites as well as five minutes from Japan Rail stops, making it popular with guests who found the location and the fact that you can rent bicycles from the reception very convenient indeed and made it easy to move around.

English-speaking staff are welcoming

The hostel staff have been frequently complemented for their friendliness, patience with non-Japanese speakers and overall professionalism which for many tourists is a comfort and even a welcome change from other hostels.

Overall great standard for a hostel

Previous guests have found Oak Zen to be clean, comfortable, well decorated and with a pleasant atmosphere for relaxing and socialising. Definitely a winner in general as well as among other hostels and one-star establishments.

Negative Reviews

No elevators

People travelling with heavy luggage, wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility should note that there are only stairs for Oak Zen’s three storeys so it is far from handicapped accessible.

Rooms can be quite small for luggage

Although common in Japan, the rooms are mostly quite tight on space and you may struggle to stow away your luggage or hang clothes up, for example. There are however lockers in most dorms and in the lobby as well.

Rooms are not soundproof

The walls of the guest rooms are quite thin, which sometimes means you can hear the voices of your neighbours in the next rooms or sound from the ensuite bathroom or from the hallways from under the door.
